What is Semantic Linguistic Turn?

Extract of: The Linguistic Semantic Turn as a proposal for the integration of people in transnational mobility: A study of the informative coverage of the arrival of the Aquarius in “La 1” of the Spanish Radio and Television Corporation (RTVE). Chapter VI.

The Linguistic Semantic Turn (LST) consists in a new ethical-semantic, philosophical, communicative and educational proposal at the level of the media and communication channels and at the level of social education, claiming the role of language as an instrument for fostering and promoting sociocultural cohesion to through the use of speeches in ways that are convenient for peaceful social, human and interpersonal relationships.

... the language performs reality arbitrarily

Taking into account the configurative role (Wittgenstein, 2010) and the transformation power of language, the proposal wants to highlight its function of social cohesion to become a tool that is pedagogically inclusive, communicatively conducive to social integration in contexts of diversity, and semantically constructive for peace building processes.

In what context was the proposal born?

The proposal was born in the context of the mass media and human mobility in an environment where media discourses are not benevolent with certain groups of people on the move when dealing with information related to the migratory phenomenon.

However, it can be applied and valued in any field of research and discipline where the linguistic and communicational factors are predominant and, where there is any group that is the victim of arbitrary abuse of exclusive discourses.

How to apply Semantic Linguistic Turn in the field of communication media?

Regarding the informative treatment of human mobility, the approach implies a work that involves both a communicative, linguistic and educational process as a means of deconstruction and unlearning of cultural violence.

At the same time, it implies a process of relearning, re-education, as well as the reconstruction of discourses to re-signify the concepts we use and the phenomena, specifically that of human mobility. On the other hand, it implies a change in the way of doing things as recommended in the epistemological turn of Martínez Guzmán (2001).

... the objective of the Linguistic Semantic Turn

This semantic linguistic turn is designed with the aim of facilitating the structural integration of people in mobility with respect to society as a whole by promoting discourses that promote cohesion and integration.

In these perspectives, re-education and unlearning are more possible the more we become aware of the evidence of cultural violence that it conveys through the media.

The proposal takes into account that words are the basic elements of any discourse and play a role in modeling and conditioning opinion through their psychosocial effects.

A significantly complex mental process of encoding and decoding. To better understand what you want to talk about, the delimitation of linguistic semantics is essential.
